Neighborhood CU to Award Three Local Students with $2,000 Scholarships

DALLAS, TX: March 14, 2023

Neighborhood Credit Union, a not-for-profit financial organization and the first credit union in the DFW metroplex, and the Neighborhood CU Foundation (NCUF), are pleased to announce their scholarship program is now open and accepting applications until May 31. The NCUF will be awarding three, $2,000 scholarships to high school seniors or college freshman who qualify.

To be eligible to apply, students must have their own account at Neighborhood Credit Union or be related to someone who is a member, in addition to being a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. The student must be a current high school senior, or college freshman, in good standing and have at least a 2.5 GPA. Eligible students also must be attending or planning to attend a two-year or four-year accredited university, college, vocational or technical school.

“We are excited to be able to increase our scholarship amounts in 2023, as we know that for many kids an extra $1,000 can go a long way to helping them pursue their educational goals,” said Jessie Swendig, president, Neighborhood CU Foundation. “Different from previous years, we also decided to extend this year’s program to students attending or planning to attend technical or vocational schools in addition to traditional two- and four-year colleges and universities. As a company that supports and encourages financial health at all levels, we wanted to ensure we were representing everyone pursuing education and training beyond high school.”

As part of the submission, students are required to submit either an essay or video addressing the specific scholarship prompt. This year’s prompt focuses on the question “In what ways can we shape our financial health for the better?” and asks students to reflect on the personal importance of financial health. In their video or essay responses, applicants will answer questions on how they have planned for their financial future, what steps they have taken, and whether or not the current economy has changed the way they view financial health.

“For the first time, the scholarship program will be managed by the NCUF, whose goal is to improve the lives of those in Texas through promoting financial wellness, providing access to financial education, and raising the overall level of financial literacy,” said Carolyn Jordan, secretary, Neighborhood CU Foundation. “We will continue to use initiatives like this and others, to provide financial health guidance, support and assistance through the foundation.”
