Neighborhood Credit Union’s Overdraft Protection is now Transfer Pay

Published February 7, 2022

A new year calls for a refresher on our favorite products! Starting February 7, 2022, the $5 transfer-based convenience service known as Overdraft Protection will be reintroduced into our line of Overdraft Services as Transfer Pay.

Since the service transfers your own money from one account to another to cover a transaction that would otherwise cause you to be overdrawn, Transfer Pay provides a better description of what to expect when members enroll. The new name will also provide clear separation from our other overdraft service, Courtesy Pay.

Along with this new name we have also removed the $5 fee from a Line of Credit transfer! Nothing else about the service will change, and members currently enrolled can continue using it without disruption.

Neighborhood’s Got You Covered: Overdraft Services

Life happens, but Neighborhood Credit Union has you covered. Our line-up of Overdraft Services will help members when they need it most, includes Transfer Pay, Courtesy Pay, and Auto-Declined

Just as the new name suggests, Transfer Pay will move your own money from one account to another if needed for a debit card transaction, ATM withdrawals, or ACH transaction overdraft. If you have linked a savings account or Line of Credit and there are enough funds to cover the transaction, it will automatically transfer the money from that account. This automatic transfer will save you the hassle of a Courtesy Pay fee and charge a low $5 transfer fee instead.

Courtesy Pay is when Neighborhood Credit Union considers paying a debit card transaction, ATM withdrawal, or ACH when a member doesn’t have enough money in your account at the time of the transaction. While it does have a higher fee than Transfer Pay, some members want that extra peace of mind when paying for a meal or checking out at the grocery store.

The Auto-Decline service is for members who choose to opt-out of Courtesy Pay or members who decline to enroll in Transfer Pay, any account without funds to cover the transaction will result in an auto-declined transaction.

Overdraft Service Fees

Can You Have both Courtesy Pay and Transfer Pay?

Members are more than welcome to enroll in both Courtesy Pay and Transfer Pay with a checking account. We will always attempt to use Transfer Pay first, but if there are not enough funds in the backup account or you do not have a Line of Credit set up, then Courtesy Pay will be considered to cover the transaction.

How to Enroll in Transfer Pay

When you first open your checking account, you will be asked if you would like to enroll in Transfer Pay. If you did not enroll in Transfer Pay when opening your account, you are still able to do so later. Simply log into your online banking account on your desktop or through your MyNCU Mobile App and send a secure email or start a secure chat to request enrollment.

How to Enroll in Courtesy Pay

Similar to Transfer Pay, you will be asked if you would like to opt-in to Courtesy Pay at the time of opening your account. If you did not opt-in to Courtesy Pay at that time, you are still able to do so later. To opt-in for the Courtesy Pay privilege for ATM and debit transactions, please review the Courtesy Pay Disclosure, and choose one of the following options:
  • To opt-in electronically, log into your Online Banking (be sure to disable your pop-up blocker if you click this link) and select Courtesy Pay Opt-In Form under the Additional Services menu, or
  • Stop by a branch and complete the form in person, or
  • Call our Member Service Center and we will mail or fax the form to you. You can then return the form to us via mail, fax, or at the branch.
