Protect Yourself from AI-Driven Scams

As technology evolves, so do the tactics used by scammers to deceive individuals and organizations. Recently, the FBI issued a warning about the rise of AI-powered scams, where criminals use artificial intelligence to create convincing text, images, and videos to manipulate victims. These scams are becoming increasingly advanced and harder to detect, making it vital to stay informed.

Key AI-Driven Threats to Watch For:

Voice Cloning: Criminals use AI to mimic the voices of loved ones or authority figures, often in emergencies, to manipulate victims into sending money or sharing sensitive information.

AI-Generated Text: Scammers create convincing emails, messages, or social media posts that appear trustworthy. These can be used in romance scams, investment fraud, phishing, or social engineering schemes to deceive victims.

Deepfake Videos: AI-generated videos are used to impersonate public figures, "prove" the identity of a fake person, or promote fraudulent investment opportunities.

Fraudulent Websites: Criminals embed AI-powered chatbots and create realistic content to lure victims into clicking malicious links or investing in fake cryptocurrency schemes.

Identity Fraud: Scammers generate fake IDs, credentials, and social media content to impersonate others, often targeting victims with confidence fraud (Tool Tip: Deception exploiting trust to steal money or sensitive information.) or phishing schemes.

How to Protect Yourself:

Verify All Requests: Confirm calls, emails, or messages directly with the person or organization they claim to be from by calling them directly and asking for verification.

Scrutinize Content: Be cautious of overly convincing messages, photos, or videos, especially those that demand urgency or financial action.

Guard Personal Information: Limit sharing personal details online that scammers can use to impersonate you, such as ensuring your social media profiles are set to private and reviewing what personal information is publicly visible.

Enable Security Features: Use two-factor authentication (2FA) to secure your accounts.

Be Skeptical of Investment or Donation Requests: Verify the legitimacy of investment opportunities, donation campaigns, or emergency assistance claims.

At Neighborhood Credit Union, your security is our priority. If you suspect fraudulent activity or receive a suspicious communication claiming to be from us, contact us immediately.
