2024 Neighborhood CU Foundation Scholarship Recipients Announced

Dallas, TX – Neighborhood Credit Union proudly announce the recipients of the 2024 Neighborhood CU Foundation Scholarship. This year, participants were invited to explore the theme: "Discuss the relationship between financial literacy and mental well-being. How does understanding and managing personal finances contribute to an individual's overall mental health?"
The scholarship winners impressed the selection committee with their insightful discussions and creative presentations on how financial knowledge significantly impacts mental health.
Lacarlton highlighted the profound connection between financial challenges and mental health, supported by data from multiple respected sources. Citing a study by the Financial Health Network, he illustrated how financial difficulties are linked to mental health struggles, particularly in lower-income communities. Lacarlton will continue his studies at Methodist University this fall
Ryan used a creative approach in his video submission, comparing financial health to a symphony where each component lays a crucial role in maintaining harmony in finances and mental wellbeing. A passionate comic book collector, Ryan showed how prudent financial management prevents stress, allowing for stress free purchases and enjoyable social interactions. He looks forward to attending Purdue University this fall.
Ashley shared a powerful narrative about witnessing the struggles of low-income families, emphasizing how financial instability can amplify mental health issues and stress. Her commitment to enhancing her financial literacy is part of her broader goal to become an American Sign Language Interpreter, promoting resilience and strategic financial planning for a secure future.
Caitlyn presented a compelling essay discussing financial literacy as fundamental to mental well-being, akin to a marriage where harmony affects all life aspects. Referencing a Forbes article, she underscored the pervasive impact of financial stress on overall health and advocated for integrated approaches to mental health support and financial education. Caitlyn is set to attend the University of North Texas.
Gabrielle demonstrated a proactive approach in managing mental and financial health through her high school coursework in finance-related subjects. In her video, she warned of the dangers of accruing debt and stresses the importance of a solid financial plan using the 50-30-20 budget rule to maintain mental peace. Gabrielle will be attending Prairie View A&M University.
